• Tucson Bird Count: Bringing Birds Home, a chance for Girl Scouts to become engaged in citizen science and conservation outreach

    The Tucson Bird Count is a very well respected urban bird count that is moving into an exciting new phase of outreach. This outreach is focusing on encouraging Tucson residents to create bird habitat in their yards for the benefit of birds and our community. The count is currently coordinated by Jennie MacFarland of Tucson Audubon Society and we are hoping to partner with Tucson Girl Scout troops in STEM driven activities such as bird walks and presentations on the importance of urban bird habitat that allows us to share our city with native birds.     We would like to thank the Arizona Foundation for Women for their $4,000 grant to support the Girl Scouts Adelante Jovencitas and Girl Scouts Beyond Bars Social Justice Programs. GSSoAz’s Social Justice Program helps girls gain the knowledge, skills, attitudes, and behaviors that will help them succeed in a difficult and complex world. Our goal is to help girls through any means possible to avoid facing a future that lacks hope and promise and to break the familial cycle of incarceration. The program provides a safe and supportive environment where girls can hear words of encouragement, learn to develop healthy relationships, and to set and achieve goals.
